I’m Torie Mathis, long time marketing agency CEO, digital marketing coach at the Smart Arsenal, and fellow Google Business user for my husband and I’s automotive museum, Miles Through Time, and our antique shop, Vintage Garage Antiques…and I want to share with you how you too can attract more customers with your free Google Business Profile.
In this video, I’ll cover:

- How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile
- Specific strategies for Salons
- Mistakes that may be destroying your Google success
- And what to do just in case you need some help
- And a free tool that is going to boost your online success
Let’s get started!
Setting Up Your Google Business Profile
1. Create or Claim Your Profile
Begin by checking if there’s an existing profile for your salon that you might claim. If not, create a new one by visiting the Google Business Profile website. You’ll need to be logged into a Google account that will be associated with the business. If you need help with this step, I have a video that walks you through the entire process.
2. Provide Complete and Accurate Information
Ensure that your salon’s name, address, and phone number are accurately and consistently listed. This consistency is crucial for local SEO benefits. Don’t forget to select the correct business category—like “Hair Salon,” “Nail Salon,” or “Beauty Salon.” Be sure that this info also matches the information you have on other sites like your website, Facebook, and directories like Yelp or Nextdoor.
3. Verification
Complete the verification process initiated by Google, usually through a postcard sent to your business address with a code. Verification solidifies the authenticity of your business on the platform, and it is required for your profile to go live to the world. If you have problems with the verification process, check out this video here.
Optimizing Your Profile
Once your profile is set up, you need to optimize it. This is that extra step that will not only help to boost your salon’s visibility on Google but also make it as attractive as possible to searchers. It’s like the blowout and style after a trim.
1. Upload Attractive Photos
Photos can make a significant impact in the beauty industry. Upload high-quality images of your salon’s interior, staff at work, and different hairstyles or treatments you offer. Regularly update these photos to reflect your current services and trends.
2. Gather and Respond to Reviews
Encourage your clients to leave positive reviews and make a habit of responding to all reviews. This interaction not only builds client relationships but also demonstrates your salon’s commitment to customer satisfaction.
3. Use Posts for Promotions and Updates
Keep your profile engaging by using the posts feature to share updates about new services, seasonal promotions, or styling tips. This content keeps your clients informed and interested in what’s new at your salon.
Specialized Strategies for Salons
1. Showcase Unique Services
If your salon offers unique services such as organic hair treatments, bridal packages, or advanced styling techniques, highlight these in your profile. Detailed descriptions can attract clients looking for specific beauty solutions.
2. Leverage the Booking Button
Google Business Profile allows integration with booking software. Enable this feature to allow clients to book appointments directly from your profile. This is a convenient option that can significantly increase bookings.
Here is how to integrate your Booking software.
3. Effective Use of Keywords
Incorporate relevant keywords in your profile’s description and posts. Terms like “best haircut,” “luxury nail salon,” or “wedding makeup artist” can help your salon appear in targeted search queries.
4. Promote Gift Cards and Loyalty Programs
If your salon offers gift cards or has a loyalty program, mention these on your profile. Promoting these offers can encourage repeat business and attract new clients looking for value.
5. Monitor Profile Insights
Utilize the insights provided by Google Business Profile to understand how customers interact with your listing. Track metrics like website visits, call button clicks, and direction requests to adapt your marketing strategies effectively.
Now that you know how to optimize your Google business profile, let’s go over a few mistakes salons make and how to fix them, so you don’t derail all the work you’ve put in.
5 Mistakes to Avoid
Incomplete Profiles:
Make sure you’ve filled out every part of your Google Business Profile. It’s like your online business card—every detail counts! If your profile is incomplete or inaccurate, Google is less likely to show it, and potential customers will be less likely to give your salon a try.
Lack of Photos:
Snap some stylish pics of your salon, your team, and some before and after shots of your clients. Great photos can really make your profile pop and draw people in.
Ignoring Reviews:
Don’t forget to respond to your reviews! It shows you really care about your clients’ experiences and helps with your salon’s vibe online. This means the good and the bad, and I have something that will help you with this in just a moment.
Inconsistent Updates:
Keep your profile fresh! Post about your latest promos or any new services. It keeps people interested and shows your salon is buzzing with activity. Pop in at least once a week and post a new update. If you’re not sure how to do this, I have a video that walks you through the entire process.
Not Using Insights:
Take a peek at the Insights section on your Google Profile. It’s packed with info on how people find you and what catches their eye, super useful for tweaking your online strategy.
Just a few tweaks can make a big difference in how potential clients see your salon online!
As always, if you have any issues, you have a few options.
First, you can drop a comment right here, and I will do my best to help you out.
Next, you can hop over to the Google help community, where other Google pros can offer up some advice.
Or, if you’d prefer, you can contact Google Support or set up an appointment with a Google Advisor; I will put all those links in the description for you.
