SEO for Beginners – Is Security IMPORTANT for SEO?
Welcome back to what is SEO – SEO for Beginners Series. In the last video, we went over SEO Factor #6 Site Authority:
We went over what makes a site authoritative and the keys to making your site more authoritative.
In this video, we are on #7 of the 10 most important ranking factors, and that is security.
SEO Factor #7: SEO Security
Another ranking factor that you may have already implemented is security.
If this isn’t in place on your website, it’s going to be tough for you to rank highly.
Google and Website Security
Google takes security very seriously. They don’t want to send people to unsecured websites where data could be breached.
If you use Chrome as your web browser, you may have seen a “Not Secure” warning when trying to visit specific sites.
This warning is shown on websites where the data between the browser and server is not properly encrypted.
Does Google Require SSL?
Yes, they actually are. Google is pushing web owners to implement an SSL certificate on their website.
The aim of Google is to become a trusted Search Engine. And to do that, Google has to show only secure websites in their search results.
That’s why Google is giving a rank push to HTTPS sites.
How Do You Know If Your Website Is Secure?
An easy way is to look in the URL bar where the web address is typed. Depending on which web browser you use, you should either see “HTTPS” before the web address or the security icon (it’s a lock in the Chrome browser).
If your website isn’t secure, you can make it secure using an SSL certificate.
How to make your website secure
Let’s Encrypt is a free SSL certificate that you can install on your website. If you don’t know how to install it, your webmaster or web host should be able to do it for you.
We like to use WP Engine for our website hosting, and it comes with a free SSL certificate and is seamless to implement.
And a note here, if you purchase an SSL through your hosting provider, do not let your certificate expire. You have to keep it up. If you don’t, web browsers will no longer show your website, it will come through as an error.
And it is not fun to get it all fixed, trust me.
When you get your renewal for your SSL, renew it immediately, or better yet, put it on autorenewal or just purchase it for multiple years.
In the next video in the series, we’ll dive into SEO Factor #8: Mobile Friendliness

Website Security and SSL FAQS
Q: What is SSL and why is it important for my website?
A: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol that provides security for communications between web browsers and servers. It encrypts the data that is exchanged between the two, making it difficult for third parties to intercept and read the information. This is important because it helps to protect sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and passwords, from being stolen.
Q: How do I know if my website is using SSL?
A: If you see a green padlock in your browser’s address bar, this indicates that your website is using SSL. You can also check for the https:// prefix in the URL of the page you’re visiting.
Q: What are the benefits of using SSL on my website?
A: Using SSL on your website can provide a number of benefits, including:
- improved security for your visitors’ data
- increased trust in your website
- improved search engine rankings
Q: How do I get SSL for my website?
A: You can purchase an SSL certificate from a reputable certificate authority. Once you have the certificate, you’ll need to install it on your web server.
Q: Do I need to use SSL for my entire website?
A: No, you don’t need to use SSL for your entire website. However, we recommend that you use it for any pages that collect sensitive information, such as payment pages or login forms.
Q: Is there anything else I need to do to make my website secure?
A: In addition to using SSL, you should also take steps to harden your server and keep your software up to date. For more information, see our guide on how to secure your website.
Q: What if I have other questions about website security?
A: If you have any other questions about website security, leave a comment and I’ll be happy to help.
